Razor Burned

How Many Blades Do We Really Need?

Summary:

Exploring the humorous escalation of razor blade count.

---

A quick trip to the drugstore for a razor should have been simple. Not one of those complex, high-tech contraptions?"just a plain, trusty manual one for the everyday task of shaving. Yet, simplicity seemed out of reach.

I'm a straightforward kind of guy, adhering to Occam's Razor: the idea that simpler is better. Now, I find myself questioning how many blades Occam's razor would have needed.

Have you noticed how manual razors are evolving like home audio systems? In the '50s, razors had a single blade, much like a transistor radio's lone speaker. Then stereo arrived, and with it, the two-bladed razor. As audio systems added subwoofers and quadraphonic sound, razors grew to three and four blades. We're now in the Dolby 5.1 era, faced with a razor boasting five blades on one side and an extra on the back. Yes, there are so many blades, they can't even fit on the same side anymore.

Where does it end? Is there a limit to how many blades a razor can possibly have? We're nearing what I call the "blade event horizon." Critical mass is almost upon us. Once, a shave might result in a minor nick; now, one slip could have me considering a new nose, à la Michael Jackson.

Perhaps razor companies are missing the point. Someone should inform them: we're removing hair, not slicing vegetables for a fancy gathering. Before long, we'll see a razor with individual blades for every hair follicle, allowing for a single swipe shave that leaves us searching for our lips the rest of the morning.

I've had enough. It's time to free myself from blade tyranny. This morning, I achieved a smooth, comfortable shave without a razor in sight.

Now, if only I could find a new string for my weed whacker.
