I'll Get Up in Just a Minute

Are you one of those rare individuals who awaken each morning feeling refreshed and cheerful, ready to embrace a new day?

Well, most of us aren't. Honestly, we’d appreciate it if those of you who do could keep it down. We're trying to savor a few more moments of precious sleep before stumbling to get our morning coffee.

Those final minutes in bed are golden.

You know what I mean?"the last few cherished moments under the covers, fully awake yet unwilling to get up. Just a few more minutes, please.

That’s why the snooze button is so beloved. Waking up is hard, especially for kids. Anyone who's tried to coax a 9-year-old out of bed for school knows exactly what I mean.

Even for adults, overcoming morning inertia can be a master class in procrastination.

Luckily, my family has developed an effective system to combat this daily challenge. We call it "The Dogs."

Here's how it works:

Doug, our main, larger dog, wakes up at 6:30 sharp, sits by my side of the bed, and places his paw on my back. We call this "Giving The Paw."

The routine goes like this:

Doug: (Paws)

Me: "Okay, Doug, good boy."

Ten seconds later:

Doug: (Paws)

Me: "Alright, Doug. Alright."

Another ten seconds pass:

Doug: (Paws)

Me: "Coming, Doug, coming."

Fifteen seconds later:

At this point, Doug's pawing becomes increasingly insistent. The message is clear: I need to get up and take him out or face the consequences.

Doug is an 85-pound Labrador Retriever, capable of producing some substantial consequences.

To avoid cleaning up a three-pound consequence off the carpet, I get up to take him out.

You may recall I mentioned "The Dogs" as our wake-up system.

Rightly so, there is a second dog in play for backup.

Enter Zippy. Unlike Doug, Zippy wastes no time with subtlety. He'll leap onto the bed, stick his wet nose in your face, ear, or eye, and sneeze.

Zippy’s approach always gets results, although I prefer Doug's gentler method.

Either way, we're up and ready to start our day.

The following poem was inspired by another family member who wished for just a few more of those precious morning minutes:

I'll Get Up in Just a Minute

Each morning when I slowly wake,
I like to lie in bed,
Ignoring all the thoughts that skip
And clamor in my head.

The daily deeds that must be done,
The tasks which will not keep,
The many errands I must run
All drag me from my sleep.

I try to close my eyes once more,
And repossess my dreams,
But give up, rising to the chore
Of facing life's regimes.
