An All-Night Serenade Crusade

Summary

I'm at the stage in life where nighttime sleep is incredibly delicate, and the slightest noise jolts me awake. While my body responds, I'm not convinced my brain fully wakes up. My wife, whom I lovingly refer to as the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage, frequently shares this view.

These days, sleep is a fragile blessing, especially at night. Even the smallest sound brings me to full alertness. Interestingly, I have no problem napping during the day?"just hand me a book, and I drift off effortlessly, regardless of any commotion around me.

This makes my nocturnal struggles all the more puzzling. Despite trying numerous solutions, restful nighttime sleep remains elusive. At one point, I tried a soothing mug of cocoa before bed, only to spill it on myself as I nodded off, waking both me and, alarmingly, my wife.

Someone once mentioned that light reading before sleep might help. Surprisingly, this worked, bringing me the sweet relief of morning refreshment after a proper night's rest.

Then, everything changed one fateful night.

Just three weeks ago, as I was settling in for a peaceful sleep, my wife suddenly sat up and asked, "What's that noise?" We listened closely and discovered an unfamiliar sound.

"There’s a cricket in our bedroom," she whispered. Holding our breaths, we listened.

Chirp... chirp... chirp.

"It sure sounds like a cricket," I agreed. Then came the words that disrupted our tranquility for almost three weeks: "Find that cricket and get rid of it."

As any dutiful husband would, I searched for the source. After 15 minutes, I realized it wasn't in the room?"the sound was coming from outside. Carefully, I opened the window to find a new neighbor: a tree frog in the tree right outside our bedroom.

Now, I generally get along with all creatures, including frogs. But this one exception defied all understanding.

All night long: chirp, chirp, chirp.

No matter how I tried reasoning or issuing ultimatums, this persistent creature wouldn't keep quiet. Strangely, every morning at 6:11, the frog would stop, vanishing into the pre-dawn darkness.

For weeks, the relentless chirping continued, until one Wednesday night, it changed tactics. The frog paused suddenly mid-chirp, jolting me awake, only to start again just as I was drifting off. The game was on, and I was its captive audience, unable to do anything about it.

Sleep became a distant memory.

In desperation, I turned to the Bible for solace and stumbled upon Psalms 127:1-2 (KJV):

"Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep."

There are countless things that might rob us of sleep, but trust in the Lord offers the promise of rest.
