Coca-Cola in Mogadishu: Branded as the Infidel Drink
In Mogadishu, Islamic militants have labeled Coca-Cola as un-Islamic, spreading a medieval mindset among the population. A hard-line sheik announced that Western products are linked to Islam's enemies and should be avoided.
This proclamation has garnered followers. One tea shop owner admitted, "Out of ignorance, I was selling and drinking Coca-Cola, but now I hate it."
The militants, referencing the Koran, argue that Mohammed stated, "There is only one beverage, and its name is water." They jokingly suggest that the Prophet dismissed Coke, claiming, "Things don't go better with Coke; it makes me burp." Furthermore, they allege he stated, "The infidels invented Coke, and true believers never imitate the infidels."
Consequently, the local Coca-Cola factory, a symbol of modernity in the impoverished city, is at risk of closure as sales plummet. Many locals are influenced by their leaders' views on the drink.
However, some citizens question the sincerity of this newfound aversion. A recent convert sarcastically remarked, "These backward thinkers are just the kind of people I want to follow. My decision to abstain from Coke has nothing to do with their machine guns."
Amidst this, some good news emerges. A 31-year-old openly defies the religious leaders, saying, "I love Coca-Cola. It's my favorite drink."
Another resident, who considers Coke his preferred beverage, expressed, "I don't have suspicions about it. I don't think hostility should mix with business. Business should be free from political and religious affairs."
His sensible comment echoes the sentiment once displayed on the IBM building in New York: "World peace through world trade." It's a hopeful notion?"by building factories in other countries, the chances of conflict may decrease. At least, one can hope.
