Everybody Finds Happiness in Their Own Way
Introduction
Happiness is a complex concept, and while some may claim expertise?"especially the elderly?"it's not always easy to define. Are they truly wise, or just more experienced at pretending to understand joy?
A Morning Encounter
Rushing to work, I buttoned my shirt on the go. As I passed by, I saw Ivan Kuzmich, affectionately known as Grandpa Kuzya. At 80, his spirit defied his age.
“Running late again?” he asked with a knowing smile.
“Yeah, no happiness in my personal life,” I responded, still fastening my buttons.
“You don’t really know what happiness is,” he chuckled.
I stopped, intrigued. Could this old man, with his years of life experience, hold the key to happiness?
Seeking Wisdom
“What do you know about happiness, Ivan Kuzmich?” I challenged. “Did you have a flashy car, a beautiful mistress, or were you a top scientist? Did you discover the formula for happiness?”
He grinned, “I’ll share my thoughts briefly.”
Grandpa Kuzya’s Formula
“At work, don’t dwell on alcohol or holidays. During holidays, forget about work. With your wife, don’t think about a mistress; with a mistress, forget about her husband. Don’t discuss money with the police or share problems with neighbors and kids?"they won’t understand or might enjoy your struggles. Avoid lending money and borrowing small items like salt. Don’t throw out the garbage in the evening. Bring home your salary, trust your wife, check your kids’ progress, and walk the dog. Most importantly, think before speaking. A word once spoken can’t be taken back. And for a sharp mind, have cereal in the morning.”
I was bewildered. “So, by focusing solely on my wife, avoiding vodka, not discussing money with the cops, not borrowing from neighbors, and eating cereal, I’ll find happiness?”
“That’s my formula,” he said, eyes twinkling. “But you must discover your own path to happiness.”
A Final Word
“Are you just talking to pass the time?” I asked, bemused by his unexpected advice.
“Well,” he chuckled, “I just got new dentures and need to get used to them. Chatting helps!”
Conclusion
Grandpa Kuzya’s wisdom might seem whimsical, but perhaps the essence of happiness lies in simple, everyday choices. As he spoke, I realized happiness requires personal discovery, and maybe, a bit of cereal in the morning.
