Cell Phones and the Dentist
Overview
We all get frustrated with people who talk on their cell phones while driving. They often seem oblivious to the road, risking everyone's safety. It's incredibly inconsiderate.
The Journey to the Dentist
Ironically, today I found myself chatting on the phone while driving to the dentist. This distraction caused me to take a wrong turn?"not once, but twice. After a few detours, I managed to arrive on time, albeit at my doctor's office instead of the dentist's.
As a child, I dreaded dental visits. My parents would trick me into going, which inevitably led to tantrums?"from the car ride there to the elevator trip back down. My mother's fear of the dentist rubbed off on me. She chose a dentist based on how much Novocain he administered, caring little about his actual dentistry skills.
Memories of a Devilish Dentist
I always suspected dentistry might have been invented by Beelzebub himself. This belief was partly due to our dentist's devilish appearance, complete with thick, intimidating glasses. He had a knack for ensuring repeat visits by handing out lollipops?"a questionable but clever marketing tactic.
Present-Day Appointments
Even with competent dentists today who demonstrate the benefits of dental care, I still get nervous before appointments. This brings me back to the cell phone incident:
1. Perhaps it wasn’t the phone that distracted me but the subconscious dread of visiting the dentist. My mind might have been trying to protect me by making me miss the appointment entirely.
2. If the cell phone caused my distraction, I feel somewhat justified. After all, what if it was my last chance to speak clearly before the dentist's tools took over? Or, heaven forbid, what if one of those devices they cram into your mouth led to a mishap?
Final Thoughts
Regardless, I maintain my right to judge others who use their phones while driving?"unless they're headed to the dentist. Then, maybe, just maybe, they deserve a pass.
