Memories flood back to my childhood, over thirty years ago, when my family moved to a rough neighborhood. My father, after securing an editing job in the federal government, decided on a low-rent, rundown brick house. Despite its squalor, my mother, with her creativity and determination, transformed it into a lovely home.
This transformation starkly contrasted with the surrounding slums. Nearby were a school and a nunnery, which my parents hoped would shield us from the neighborhood’s violence. Unfortunately, their hopes were in vain. Violence was rampant, and I became a target?"a punchbag in their eyes.

One winter evening, after hockey, a gang of six cornered me. Their leader taunted me, and despite my attempts to avoid trouble, they attacked. Though I fought back, the odds were against me. A kind stranger intervened, saving me from further harm.
Days later, I saw one of my attackers, a neighbor known for weakness, crying angrily outside his dilapidated home. His anger tempered my own. Understanding his pain, I refrained from adding to it. His life at home was harsh; a violent father and abusive mother made his existence unbearable, pushing him to vent his resentment on others.
This insight into violence’s origin has stayed with me. I realized aggressors often stem from victimhood. Some argue violence can be gratuitous, but I disagree. Circumstances themselves aren’t inherently favorable or unfavorable; it’s one’s perception that matters. Hostility, real or perceived, triggers aggression.
Aggressors, victims of their tormented minds or harsh experiences, deserve compassion. Punishment should be effective, not vengeful. Vengeance only perpetuates harm and savagery. Justice should prevent crime, protect the public, and not descend into cruelty.
The distinction between severity and cruelty in justice is crucial. Severe enforcers administer punishment as a necessary evil, while cruel ones delight in their actions. The goal of justice should be reformation?"a fundamental change in a criminal’s mindset?"and the ideal is a justice understood and freely practiced by all.
True civilization thrives in an environment of love, akin to sunshine for trees. This nurturing allows individuals to flourish into their best selves. However, love can also be possessive or manipulative, cautioning us to foster love that nurtures rather than captures. Hate the evil, not the individuals who embody it, as they have the potential for good.
My parents’ love and the kindness of others in my life helped me grow into a joyful, respectful person. I was fortunate to be a good seed, thriving in a loving environment. The experiences with violence taught me that while civility should be the norm, understanding and compassion are essential responses to barbarity.
